On the eve of her fiftieth birthday, Dana Buckman seemed to have it all - a successful career, a brilliant husband, and two loving daughters who are building lives of their own. But when she dies in a freak accident, her daughters discover that their mother was not the person they thought they knew. She had kept secrets from them all, secrets that revealed sorrow and loss, as well as the sacrifices she made for their happiness. Spanning five generations of women, “Waiting by the Gate” tells the timeless story of the bond between mothers and daughters, and of love that transcends time.
A beautifully written tale with well developed characters living unsuspected secrets that mold the rest of their lives and those of their children. I couldn't put it down.

This book knocked me right over. I was thinking about the review I'd write and, "Stunning debut!" came to mind, but that wouldn't do it justice, because such a phrase implies that for someone's first book, it's really good, when, in fact, a seasoned, veteran author would be proud to call this book their own. The fact that it's centered on five generations of women, not all wonderful, is timely. I have three sisters and I've been married three times, leading me to believe I knew more about women than most. Wrong! The nuance, the quiet heroism, intelligence, tenderness, manipulation, nobility, and the undaunted spirit are nothing short of wondrous, and they're all packed up in a storyline so enthralling that I went short on sleep until I finished the book, a good fourteen hours after I started it. The jacket says the author consults, and I'm certain her work involves a lot of writing, because she's good, and I mean really good. You Go, Isabelle!
